Overview
This module will take approximately 30 minutes to complete and includes the following elements.
- Principles of management
- General principles to follow for all patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), how to assess 'rate control' and when to refer a patient to secondary care.
- Scoring tools
- CHA2DS2VASc, the ORBIT tool and how to combine assessment scores.
- Prescribing
- Which anticoagulants should be prescribed.
- Underlying causes
- How to identify and manage any underlying causes of AF.
- Follow up
- Initial follow up of patient, warfarin and anticoagulant monitoring and follow up, and advice and information to be given to patients.
- Optional quiz to assess your learning from the course
- A list of useful links and resources for further reading
Goals
During this course you will learn:
- How to assess the need for urgent admission to hospital.
- How to identify people who may benefit from rhythm control and refer appropriately.
- How to identify and manage people suitable for antithrombotic medication to reduce the risk of stroke.
