Overview

This module will take approximately 30 minutes to complete and includes the following elements. 

  • Principles of management
    • General principles to follow for all patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), how to assess 'rate control' and when to refer a patient to secondary care.
  • Scoring tools
    •  CHA2DS2VASc, the ORBIT tool and how to combine assessment scores.
  • Prescribing
    •  Which anticoagulants should be prescribed.
  • Underlying causes
    •  How to identify and manage any underlying causes of AF.
  • Follow up
    • Initial follow up of patient, warfarin and anticoagulant monitoring and follow up, and advice and information to be given to patients.
  • Optional quiz to assess your learning from the course
  • A list of useful links and resources for further reading

Goals

  • How to assess the need for urgent admission to hospital.
  • How to identify people who may benefit from rhythm control and refer appropriately.
  • How to identify and manage people suitable for antithrombotic medication to reduce the risk of stroke.
