Overview

This module will take approximately 30 minutes to complete and includes the following:

  • Assessment
    • Including assessing the needs of a dying person and their family/carers and how to recognize the terminal phase of the person's illness.
  • Management
    • How to appropriately administer general palliative care.
  • Optional quiz to assess your learning from the course.
  • A list of useful links and resources for further reading.

Goals

During this course you will learn to:

  • Make an assessment that a person has entered the palliative phase of their illness.​
  • Recognize the need to assess the person's physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs promptly and at regular intervals.​
  • Relieve the person's symptoms and fears.​
  • Assess the need for anticipatory prescribing of medications.​
  • Enable the person to die in the place of their choosing whenever possible.​
  • Involve the person, carers and family members in discussions about management changes.
