Presenter Biography

Justin is a Professor of Orofacial Pain at Newcastle University's School of Dental Sciences, an Honorary Consultant Oral Surgeon at Newcastle-Upon-Tyne’s Hospitals’ NHS Foundation Trust, and the British Dental Association’s Chief Scientific Advisor in the UK. His primary research interests are in orofacial pain at the first and second translational research gaps. He has wide applied research methodological experience, receiving international awards for both clinical and pedagogical research. He established and leads a tertiary referral multidisciplinary clinical service for orofacial pain in the North of England. He is currently leading the development of the UK’s first Health Innovation Neighbourhood.

Overview

Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD, a musculoskeletal pain) are the most common cause of mouth, face or head pain following ‘toothache’. They can present in a variety of ways including earache, face pain, tooth pain, jaw ‘locking’, and headache aggravated by jaw movement or function. Many different parts of the health service may therefore encounter an initial presentation of TMD. This webinar will give an overview of a proposed new care pathway for Temporomandibular Disorders and the evidence behind it. The care pathway tries to address the need to provide simple, initial, and easy steps to detection, diagnosis and self-management for all healthcare professionals. Further resources will also be signposted.
